Meet Gianji

Dark, hypnotic, and impossible to ignore, Gianji has been carving out a distinctive visual language. Known online as @gianjjii, the Italy-based digital artist and designer has been rapidly gaining attention across Instagram and TikTok for his gritty, cinematic work, where deep shadows and distorted textures create an atmosphere that feels both seductive and unsettling.

A lot of your work touches on desire, obsession and temptation. What keeps bringing you back to those themes?  

I think I’m naturally drawn to things that feel intense or a little uncomfortable. Desire and obsession are interesting to me because they can be beautiful and dark at the same time. I don’t really sit down thinking “I’m going to make something about temptation,” though. It usually comes out naturally through the images I choose, the way I edit them, and the atmosphere I’m trying to create.

What makes an artwork unforgettable to you?  

For me, it’s when an artwork leaves you with a feeling that’s hard to explain. It doesn’t necessarily have to be super complex or technically perfect. Sometimes it can be a really simple image, but there’s something about it that stays in your head. I like work that makes you want to look at it again because you feel like there’s something you didn’t fully understand the first time.

What’s more important to you: making something visually striking or making someone feel something?

Definitely making someone feel something. Obviously I care a lot about how something looks, and I want my work to be visually strong, but I think the visual side is more like the way I get someone into the image. If it looks good but doesn’t leave you with anything after you’ve seen it, it’s not as interesting to me. The best work does both.
