Meet Fatbeard

This collection is a collaboration with Fatbeard, a Hong Kong-based pixel artist known for his detailed, nostalgic illustrations and animations. Drawing on his earlier background in oil painting, he brings a painterly eye for landscapes into the pixel-art medium, often depicting Japanese scenery, Hong Kong streetscapes and everyday moments with a distinctly retro feel.

We sat down with Fatbeard to learn more about how he approaches his art:

What’s the strangest place an idea for your art has ever come from?

I usually draw inspiration from Pinterest, places I’ve visited in Japan or Hong Kong from my photo albums, or stories from friends traveling abroad. However, on rare occasions, a scene will flash in my mind purely from looping a specific song. I will then piece the artwork together using various references to capture that mental image. For example, in this piece (https://www.instagram.com/p/DKfMI_dSbIG/), I was looping the song A/Z by Hiroyuki Sawano feat. Mizuki almost every day, and I channeled those exact musical vibes directly into the art.

What’s one rule of art you think is made to be broken?

While learning the basics by the book is crucial when you are starting out, true growth happens when you begin developing your own unique workflow and thinking outside the box. Personally, I always identify what I want the audience to notice first, which leads me to work backward compared to traditional art methods. I draw the main elements first, soft lock them into position, and then build the background around them. This approach drastically improves my efficiency. I avoid over-perfecting the background early on because it ultimately serves as a supporting element to the main subject. Only toward the end of the process do I layer in finer details to add depth and narrative to the setting, ensuring it perfectly complements the overall piece.

If you could leave a message for the person reading this, what would you say?

If you have a passion for pixel art, start immediately. Stalling only drains your motivation. It can feel intimidating at first, but dedicating just 30 minutes a day to practice will yield significant improvement within a few months. Start small with something you love on a canvas no larger than 50x50 pixels like a mug or a book. Once you get comfortable, gradually increase the canvas size to accommodate more complex details. If you keep repeating this process, you will quickly realize just how capable you are. Finally, always challenge yourself with something new. You never truly know what style of pixel art resonates with you until you try it, and keeping things fresh ensures you will never get bored.
